They first met while Rivera was painting a mural at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City and Kahlo was a teenage student. They married in a civil ceremony on 21 August 1929, traveled and worked together in the early 1930s, including commissions in the United States, divorced in 1939 and remarried on December 8, 1940 in San Francisco. The couple had no children together, Kahlo suffered several miscarriages, and their relationship continued with separations and reconciliations until Kahlo's death in 1954.
